Claude helps recover 5 Bitcoins, post goes viral! But cybersecurity experts: this story has two major blind spots

Users found their long-forgotten wallet with the help of AI model Claude, recovering five bitcoins. Although AI did not crack the password, it assisted in digital forensics and filtered key evidence from a vast number of files, completing the rescue.

Losing the seed phrase and watching millions of dollars vanish is a pain shared by many seasoned crypto users. However, recently a viral post on social platform X told a story of a cinematic turnaround. A user claimed that with the help of AI model Claude, they successfully retrieved nearly nine-year-old, $400k worth of Bitcoin.

Using the pseudonym “Cprkrn,” the user exclaimed: “Oh my God, Claude actually did it!” They tagged developer Anthropic, CEO Dario Amodei, and included an old post from August 2023, proving they had been trying to crack a wallet that had been “deeply locked” since 2015.

On-chain data also confirmed that the Bitcoin address starting with “14VJyS” had been inactive for nine years until recently, when it was finally seen moving, transferring out five bitcoins.

This post quickly attracted over 6 million views, sparking widespread discussion: Can large language models truly assist in handling encrypted files and forgotten password recovery?

However, a close look at the shared screenshots reveals no evidence that Claude directly “hacked” the unbreakable cryptographic defenses of Bitcoin; instead, AI played more of a powerful digital assistant role, helping users organize the complex process of encrypted file and password recovery.

According to the post, Cprkrn had repeatedly tried using btcrecover and Hashcat (two professional software often used by cybersecurity professionals for brute-force cracking or testing encrypted data passwords) to unlock the wallet, but all efforts failed. Eventually, they fed a large number of files from an old university computer into Claude for analysis. Unexpectedly, AI successfully matched a wallet file linked to their old laptop’s “seed phrase.”

“This wallet was locked for over 11 years because I was high at the time, mentally foggy, and changed the password,” they joked. After AI identified the key file, the seed phrase unlocked the wallet smoothly. “The way it was unlocked turned out to be an obvious flaw—so funny.”

While the individual praised AI’s performance, cybersecurity experts specializing in wallet recovery pointed out the flaw: how much credit can truly be given to Claude in the entire unlocking process? After all, the user already possessed the wallet file, seed phrase, and historical data needed to rebuild the password. One cybersecurity expert stated:

What Claude is really doing is likely sifting through massive amounts of historical data to find clues related to old wallet credentials or password formats. Rather than “cracking” the password, it’s more about “digital forensics and data classification.”

The reason this event drew significant market attention is that last month, Anthropic launched the “Claude Mythos” model, emphasizing high-level security features. The new model claims to accurately identify software vulnerabilities and automatically perform advanced cybersecurity tasks, fueling public imagination about Claude’s ability to handle complex analysis.

However, this “AI myth” was met with skepticism on Reddit, where many rational users criticized the post for exaggerating AI’s actual contribution. One comment said:

Claude didn’t do anything groundbreaking; it just helped him “search” the files. This sensationalized, vague description only tricks gullible people into thinking AI achieved some great feat again.

Another user pointed out: “Now you understand why the general public loves AI so much? It’s not a technological revolution; it’s just perfectly catering to human laziness.”

Regardless, the post successfully drew global attention and reignited discussions about AI and cryptocurrency intersections. But the truth may be far less sci-fi than the headline suggests.
