I just realized that platinum has had a wild ride this year. At the beginning of 2025, it was still under $1,000 per ounce, then starting in June, it shot up dramatically—reaching nearly $2,900 by the beginning of the year. Crazy, right? And now the question many are asking: Is platinum really more worthwhile than gold?
The interesting part: gold has overall performed better (the last 10 years +331%), but platinum gained significantly more percentage-wise last year (+110% vs. +70% for gold). The reason is simple—platinum was long underestimated, while gold keeps hitting new records. Still, gold is still over $2,700 more per ounce than platinum. Insane when you consider that platinum is rarer and used much more in industry (cars, hydrogen, medicine).
But beware: the volatility is extreme. A 35% crash within days after reaching a high—this is not for the faint of heart. For me, the question remains whether platinum was just gold or only a short-term rally. Probably both—depending on how you invest.
