I always get lost with this time zone thing when I want to trade on foreign exchanges. Like, what time does the American stock market actually open? Turns out, the NYSE opens at 9:30 a.m. New York time, which is around 10:30 or 11:30 here in Brasília depending on whether daylight saving time is in effect there. It's a bit tricky to keep track of, but once you get the hang of it, it's all good.

The cool thing is that global markets operate like a relay race. First, the Asian markets (Tokyo, Shanghai) open, then Europe (London, Paris), and only then do the Americans come into play. These overlapping moments are pure gold for those looking to take advantage of higher liquidity.

Here in Brazil, we’re lucky to be right in the middle. B3 opens at 10:00 and closes at 17:00, and during this period, there’s also movement in the US markets. Basically, between 10:30 and 17:00 is when most of the action happens because Wall Street is awake and Brazilians can follow in real time.

What’s changed a lot is that now exchanges offer extended trading hours. In the US, you can trade from 4:00 a.m. local time, which here would be around 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. depending on the time of year. That helps a lot when important news comes out overnight and you want to react quickly.

For those looking to trade American stocks, BDRs, or even commodities, knowing what time the US market opens is kind of essential for building a strategy that works. Without that, you’re basically shooting in the dark, you know? Now, when someone asks me what time the US market opens, I have a ready answer and can explain why it matters for investors here in Brazil.
