Do you know that debate about who is the richest player in the world? Well, we always think of Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi, but the answer is quite different. I found out that the title belongs to Faiq Bolkiah, a guy from Brunei with an estimated fortune of around 20 billion dollars. But here’s the catch: his wealth didn’t come from football, it came from the royal family. He’s the nephew of the sultan, inherited a billion-dollar estate with luxury assets and global investments. A bit different, right?
But it gets interesting when you see the full ranking of the richest player in the world and discover there are names you wouldn’t expect. Mathieu Flamini, former Arsenal and Milan player, became a billionaire after retiring. He founded a company focused on sustainable solutions and bioproducts, which earned him way more than a football salary. It shows that investment and innovation can beat even the biggest sports contracts.
Now, if you want to talk about who really got rich by playing, then Cristiano Ronaldo is the leader. The guy earns 220 million a year just in salary at Al-Nassr, plus 65 million in sponsorships and business ventures. He owns hotels, gyms, and a personal brand that generates a lot. Messi also built a solid base with global contracts and real estate businesses, although with a more discreet profile.
What caught my attention the most is seeing that football has truly become a billion-dollar industry. It’s not just players, coaches are also earning a fortune. Simeone at Atlético Madrid earns around 40 million annually, Pep Guardiola 24 million. It’s become like a sports CEO role, not just a coach anymore.
And the clubs? Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona with market values in the billions. Real Madrid alone is worth about 6.6 billion. Behind all of this are billionaires, investment funds, royal families injecting money. Saudi Arabia’s PIF, for example, has 700 billion in resources. That explains why certain clubs maintain financial power even during tough times.
The truth is, understanding who the richest player in the world is today isn’t just about salary. It’s about accumulated wealth, side businesses, investments off the field. Football stopped being just passion and has become one of the most powerful industries on the planet. Those involved understand it’s a business game much bigger than what happens on the pitch.
