People keep asking me what exactly an EA is, because I see many traders on MT4 talking about EAs a lot, and it seems like a powerful assistant.
In reality, it's simpler than you think. An EA is a computer program that acts as a trading assistant. It analyzes market data, issues buy and sell orders, and manages profits and losses automatically, so we don't have to stare at the screen all the time.
I see many people confused because it sounds like a magic tool, but in fact, an EA is just a set of instructions programmed to operate according to predefined rules. It is not artificial intelligence that can become highly skilled on its own.
The clear advantage is that we don't need to monitor the market 24 hours a day, especially in FOREX trading, which involves long trading hours. Just set up the EA properly, and it will keep working while we do other things.
Another benefit is that EAs make decisions based on statistical data, not emotions. Therefore, they won't make decisions driven by fear or greed for profit like humans often do. Importantly, an EA can close losses precisely at the STOP LOSS level we set.
However, there are limitations we need to know. An EA is a program written to trade only a specific asset. It cannot be used to trade other assets. For example, an EA designed for FOREX cannot be used to trade gold or oil.
Another point is that an EA only follows the parameters we set. If we set it to close profits at 6%, it will close at 6%, even if the market rises to 20%. And most importantly, an EA does not guarantee no losses. There is a chance it might read signals incorrectly or the market moves abnormally, which could wipe out the account.
From my experience, the best approach is to use an EA alongside manual trading. In the beginning, while we're still learning about the EA, it can help generate profits and prevent some losses. At the same time, we trade ourselves and observe to gain experience. Because ultimately, successful trading comes from our own knowledge and experience, not just relying solely on a program.
