To trade U.S. stocks, you need to understand the time zones properly. Especially from Korea, you should check the U.S. market holidays to avoid confusion.

The trading hours for NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX are the same, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time. In Korean time, that’s from 11:30 PM to 6:00 AM the next day. The pre-market is available from 4:00 AM, and the after-hours trading runs from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

But remember, from March to November, daylight saving time shifts the hours forward by one hour. And importantly, the U.S. market has no price limit bands. Unlike Korea, this means rapid declines can happen quickly, so be cautious.

For U.S. market holidays in 2026, the days off are January 1, January 19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), February 16 (Presidents’ Day), April 3 (Good Friday), May 25 (Memorial Day), June 19 (Juneteenth), July 3 (Independence Day), September 7 (Labor Day), November 26 (Thanksgiving), and December 25 (Christmas) — a total of 10 days. Additionally, on July 2, November 27, and December 24, the market closes early at 1:00 PM.

Since other global stock markets operate in different time zones, if you plan to trade internationally, you should also check the Korea Exchange (09:00–15:30), Tokyo (09:00–15:00, with lunch break), London (5:00 PM to 1:30 AM), Hong Kong, and Shanghai times. In summary, when trading U.S. stocks, it’s crucial to understand the time zones and U.S. market holidays in advance.
