Xi-Trump meeting behind-the-scenes: Musk’s son attends, Lei Jun’s photo becomes the focus

The highly watched Xi-Trump meeting took place yesterday (5/14), and Tesla and X boss Elon Musk contributed two major trending behind-the-scenes moments for the community.

First, he attended together with his 6-year-old son X Æ A-Xii, and on social media he revealed in simplified Chinese that his son is learning Mandarin. Next, there was the expression Elon Musk made when Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun went to take a selfie with him—an image that quickly sparked all kinds of interpretations and discussions online.

Musk’s son X Æ A-Xii attends the Xi-Trump meeting

According to The Sun, Musk brought his 6-year-old son X Æ A-Xii to attend the Xi-Trump meeting.

From the footage that was released, X Æ A-Xii can be seen wearing dark long pants, a white shirt, and a light blue traditional Chinese silk vest embroidered with green. In his hand, he holds a brown dragon-shaped crossbody bag. He followed his father into a meeting room full of suits and entered while holding his father’s hand.

After the related video was shared by the Chinese X account “Li Teacher Is Not Your Teacher,” Musk also replied in simplified Chinese: “My son is learning Mandarin.” The move drew massive attention and even caused “Musk posting in Chinese” to briefly top the hot search list on Chinese Weibo.

However, X Æ A-Xii’s mother, Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes, does not like her young son attending all kinds of large public events.

After Musk took X Æ A-Xii to the White House last year to witness Trump signing an executive order, Grimes said she was not aware of it, and she believed her son should not appear in the public eye like that.

Xiaomi’s Lei Jun takes a selfie with Musk

Another topic that sparked discussion in the community was Lei Jun from Xiaomi taking a selfie with Musk. According to Forbes, judging from the video footage that was released, when Lei Jun asked Musk to take a photo, Musk made a playful face with a raised eyebrow, but after the picture was taken he exhaled, then looked down and started scrolling on his phone.

The seemingly funny moment of “Musk’s social energy being used up” spread rapidly across Chinese social media, and “Lei Jun and Musk’s photo” also made it into the top three of Weibo’s hot search list. Some netizens humorously commented that Lei Jun was lowering his stance in front of his idol.

Lei Jun has expressed admiration for Musk, and he is also one of the first Chinese owners of the Tesla Model S. And since the Xiaomi-led investment in the electric vehicle market in 2021, the brand has become one of the best-selling competitors to Tesla’s Model Y in the China market.

Musk and tech leaders, politicians at the same table

At this Xi-Trump meeting, sitting at the conference table together with Musk were Apple CEO Tim Cook (soon to step down), U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump and Xi Jinping held a meeting lasting for two hours to discuss the current tariff ceasefire agreement and the issue of Taiwan sovereignty.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Xi Jinping emphasized to Trump that the Taiwan issue is the most important part of China-U.S. relations. If handled properly, bilateral relations can remain stable overall; otherwise, the two countries will have conflict, putting all China-U.S. relations into an extremely dangerous situation. At the same time, Xi Jinping also stated that the two countries must become partners and avoid becoming rivals.

China’s official media outlet Xinhua also reported that during the meeting, Xi Jinping said that China’s door would be opened even wider. He welcomed the U.S. to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China and expressed confidence that American companies would enjoy broader prospects in China.
