I have been following this mystery for years, and honestly, I increasingly believe that we may never know who Satoshi Nakamoto is. And honestly, I think that’s exactly what he (or they) wanted.
Think about it: Bitcoin was built on the premise that you don’t need to trust anyone. And then its creator disappears completely. It’s almost poetic. From 2008, when he published that revolutionary whitepaper on a decentralized electronic cash system, to 2009 when Bitcoin went live, Satoshi was there, answering in forums, tweaking code. But in 2011, he simply vanished. No goodbyes, no explanations.
What we do know is that he controls around one million BTC mined in those early days. With the current price at $79.08K, that’s more than $79 billion. And here’s the craziest part: not a single satoshi from those wallets has moved. It’s the most extreme HODL in history.
Now, was it one person or a group? That remains a debate. Some say the technical depth and range of knowledge point to a team. Others see consistency in the writing style that suggests a lone developer. Satoshi claimed to be a Japanese man born in 1975, but that almost perfect English and activity patterns that align more with European hours… let’s just say there are reasons to be skeptical.
The most mentioned candidates are Hal Finney (a respected cryptographer who received the first BTC transaction), Nick Szabo (who created “bit gold” years earlier, with notable similarities), and Dorian Nakamoto (whose name literally is Satoshi Nakamoto). All have denied involvement. Finney passed away in 2014. Szabo and Dorian continue to deny it. Dead end.
What’s interesting is that in October 2024, the documentary Money Electric revived all this. Cullen Hoback, known for investigating conspiracies, focused on Bitcoin’s origins and suggested new clues. But even with that, no conclusive proof was found. The mystery persists.
And look, I think there’s something beautiful in all this. Bitcoin was designed to operate without depending on its creator. Satoshi Nakamoto’s disappearance isn’t a flaw; it’s a feature. It reinforces exactly what the project represents: a system that doesn’t need a leader, a central authority, or trust in a person.
Whoever he is, he remains the most legendary HODLer of all time. And he probably always will be.
