Ever wondered what's a degen in crypto? Honestly, it's become such a common label in our community that most people throw it around without really thinking about where it comes from.
So basically, degen is short for degenerate, and it originally came from gambling circles to describe people who bet recklessly. In crypto, we use it to talk about traders who go all-in on super risky, speculative plays. These are the people leveraging hard, chasing volatility, and betting big on moves that could go either way.
Here's the thing though - a lot of people in the space wear the label like a badge. They're not ashamed of it. They see themselves as risk-takers willing to embrace the chaos of the market. And honestly, some of them are genuinely committed to the projects they believe in, actively contributing to communities and pushing things forward despite the danger.
The risky part is real though. When you're running high-leverage positions trying to maximize gains, you're also maximizing losses. One bad move and you're wiped out. Degen traders often make decisions based on short-term price swings rather than actual fundamentals, which means you're basically gambling on momentum.
Then there's the darker side of degen culture - the pump and dump schemes. Some people use the label for folks who coordinate to pump coins, get others excited, then dump their bags and leave everyone else holding the losses. That's where the term actually fits the negative meaning.
But what is a degen really? For most people, it's just someone willing to take bigger risks than average in hopes of bigger returns. Some make it, most don't. It's the nature of the game.
