Been scrolling through some old charts lately and man, 2021 really was something else for altcoins. The best performers from that year absolutely crushed it compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum. Let me share what stood out the most.

Solana was probably the most impressive Layer-1 play back then. Started around $1.5 in January and hit nearly $300 by November—that's insane growth. The narrative was strong: fast, cheap, and actually had real ecosystem activity with NFTs and DeFi projects building on it. Dogecoin had its moment too, especially with all the Elon hype. Went from fractions of a cent to 74 cents at peak. Shiba Inu was even wilder though—literally started as a meme but somehow delivered over a million percent returns. Still crazy to think about.

For gaming and metaverse tokens, Axie Infinity was the standout. Play-to-earn was the hottest narrative, and AXS delivered massive returns—from $0.5 to $165. The Sandbox and Gala Games also rode that wave hard. Polygon caught everyone's attention as an Ethereum scaling solution with real utility, while Avalanche and Fantom competed as alternative Layer-1s with strong DeFi ecosystems.

Terra and Luna were interesting too—the whole UST stablecoin and Anchor Protocol thing looked promising at the time, though we all know how that ended. But for 2021 specifically, these were definitely the best altcoin performers of the cycle. Crazy ROIs across the board.
