I just realized this recently; many times I need a temporary number to receive verification codes. Buying a new SIM card is too wasteful, and the SMS receiving platform really saves lives. I've encountered many pitfalls before—some platforms simply don't receive messages, others have delays lasting forever. Only later did I figure out which ones are reliable.
Basically, the SMS receiving platform is a service that rents virtual numbers, covering many countries and regions. After registration, you select the country, bind the target website, and the verification code is displayed directly in the backend. Most charge per use, some support monthly subscriptions. Compared to regular phone numbers, they protect privacy and are convenient for testing, especially suitable for account verification experiments or registering on overseas websites.
A few I’ve used that are pretty good: SMS-Activate is insanely fast, usually receiving verification codes within 10 seconds, with full country coverage; Super Cloud SMS offers US numbers in 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers even faster at 5-20 seconds, occasionally slower during peak times; 5SIM has a clean interface and clear API documentation, and can normally receive codes from Google, Twitter, etc.; Xiaoniao SMS specializes in domestic applications, usually within 5-15 seconds, with good cost performance; Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for light users.
The biggest pitfall is that shared numbers are often already registered, and verification codes for less popular platforms may be delayed. It’s recommended to prepare several numbers for switching. Don’t choose platforms just for cheapness; those with good reputation and high activity are more reliable. If you’re just testing interfaces, any platform supporting API is enough; but if you need stable registration on a specific site, it’s best to top up a few numbers for emergencies. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is really practical and can prevent waste.
Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best, with low delays, wide country coverage, and especially the most stable verification code reception.
