You know, I've long noticed that movies about crypto are becoming more and more popular—and it’s not for no reason. Filmmakers have finally realized that cryptocurrency and blockchain aren’t just financial stories, but an entire universe with drama, intrigue, and real mysteries.

Over the past few years, I’ve rewatched quite a few crypto movies, and I want to share my discoveries. Let’s start with the fact that if you’re looking for a pure thriller, Crypto (2019) is exactly on target. A Wall Street banker uncovers a conspiracy involving cryptocurrency, money laundering, and organized crime. Tense, interesting, gripping from the first minutes.

If, however, you want something lighter but still about crypto, then Bitcoin Heist (2016) is a Vietnamese film where thieves go after a cybercriminal. Picture Ocean’s Eleven, but in the world of cryptocurrencies. Funny, fast-paced, and not boring.

But if, like me, you’re seriously interested in the technology, then documentaries about crypto are a whole different level. Alex Winter’s Trust Machine (2018) immerses you in how blockchain can reshape entire industries. It’s not just about money, but about how technology changes society.

The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin (2014) shows Bitcoin’s path through the eyes of early believers—miners and investors. Seeing how people believed in it long before anyone took it seriously is inspiring.

And then there’s StartUp (2016-2018), a series I’ve rewatched about five times. The creation of GenCoin, criminal Miami, and the obstacles developers face. It’s not just about crypto—it’s about people and their ambitions.

Bitcoin Banking (2016) is a great introduction for beginners. It really explains the history, regulatory hurdles, and the potential. I recommended this film to friends who didn’t understand blockchain at all.

There are also unexpected finds. Crypto Race (2020) focuses on women in the crypto space—a rare angle, but very inspiring. It shows how blockchain affects different industries around the world.

Bitcoin: Beyond the Bubble (2018) raises the main question: is the bubble or the future of money? Informative and thought-provoking.

The Bitcoin Gospel (2015) is for philosophers. Roger Ver talks about the values driving the crypto community—about freedom, about ideals.

On Netflix, Trust No One: Hunt for the Crypto King (2022) is a real crypto mystery about Gerald Cotten and QuadrigaCX. 250 million in inaccessible funds, and the mysterious death of the CEO. Terrifying, but impossible to stop watching.

Decrypted (2021) is a black comedy about a government team hunting Satoshi Nakamoto. Funny and strange at the same time.

Open Money (2020) follows Dragonchain and its fight with regulators. It shows the real challenges in the industry.

Overall, movies about crypto offer everything—from action to philosophy. If you’re a beginner, start with documentaries. If you want entertainment—go for thrillers and comedies. And if you’re already into crypto, all of this will look interesting from a new angle.

So what will you choose? A crime thriller, or a deep dive into the technology?
