Just realized a lot of people don't really understand what PNL actually means when they're trading. Let me break this down because it's honestly one of the most important things to track if you want to know whether you're actually making money or not.
So PNL is literally profit and loss. That's it. It's the difference between what you paid for something and what you sold it for. The thermometer of your trading account, basically.
Here's the simplest way to think about it: you bought 0.1 BTC at $40,000, so you spent $4,000. Then you sold it at $42,000, which means you got $4,200 back. Before fees, that's $200 profit. After exchange fees, maybe $198. That $198 is your realized PNL.
The formula is straightforward: (Selling Price - Buying Price) × Amount - Fees. Positive number means you're in profit. Negative means you took an L.
What confuses people is when you're still holding a position. That's unrealized PNL. Your profit or loss exists on paper, but you haven't actually closed the trade yet. The moment you sell, it becomes realized PNL. That's when it actually counts.
There's also this thing called ROI, which is basically your PNL expressed as a percentage of your initial investment. And if you're using leverage or margin, your PNL can swing way harder because you're amplifying both wins and losses.
Volatile PNL is when your profit or loss is just bouncing around like crazy because the market's moving fast. One minute you're up, next minute you're down. That's why position sizing matters.
Think of it like this: you buy coffee for $50 and sell it for $70 an hour later. Your PNL is +$20. If you only sold it for $40, your PNL is -$10. On crypto exchanges, it's the exact same concept, except the numbers move way faster and there's usually a lot more at stake.
So yeah, understanding your PNL is pretty crucial if you want to actually track your trading performance. Check it regularly. It'll tell you if you're actually good at this or just getting lucky.
