Xi–Trump Summit Behind-the-Scenes: Musk’s Son Attends, Lei Jun’s Photo Is the Focus

The highly anticipated Xi–Trump summit debuted yesterday (5/14), and Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk contributed two major viral highlights for the community.

First, he attended with his 6-year-old son X Æ A-Xii and, on social media, shared in Simplified Chinese that his son is learning Mandarin; next, Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, made an expression when finding Musk for a selfie, which quickly triggered all kinds of interpretations and discussions online.

Musk brings son X Æ A-Xii to attend the Xi–Trump summit

According to The Sun, Musk brought his 6-year-old son X Æ A-Xii to attend the Xi–Trump summit.

From the leaked footage, X Æ A-Xii can be seen wearing dark long pants, a white shirt, and a light blue traditional Chinese silk vest with green embroidery. In his hand, he holds a brown dragon-shaped crossbody bag. He followed his father into the conference room full of suits, holding his father’s hand as they entered.

After the related video was shared by the Chinese Twitter account “Teacher Li is not your teacher,” Musk replied in Simplified Chinese: “My son is learning Mandarin.” This action drew widespread attention, and “Musk posting in Chinese” briefly topped China’s Weibo hot search list.

However, X Æ A-Xii’s mother, Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes, does not like her young son attending all kinds of major public events.

After Musk took X Æ A-Xii to the U.S. White House last year to witness Trump signing an executive order, Grimes previously revealed that she was unaware of it and believed her son should not appear in the public spotlight like this.

Xiaomi’s Lei Jun takes a selfie with Musk

Another topic that sparked conversation on social media was Lei Jun of Xiaomi taking a selfie with Musk. According to Forbes, from the exposed video, when Lei Jun asked to take a photo with him, Musk made a slight expression by squinting his eyes, but after the photo was taken, he let out a breath, then lowered his head and scrolled on his phone.

The seemingly amusing scene of “Musk’s social energy running out” spread quickly across Chinese social media, and “Lei Jun and Musk pose for a photo” also ranked in the top three on Weibo’s hot search list. Some netizens humorously commented that Lei Jun was lowering his stance in front of an idol.

Lei Jun has expressed admiration for Musk, and he is also one of China’s earliest owners of the Tesla Model S. And since he led Xiaomi’s investment in the electric vehicle market in 2021, the brand has become one of the top competitors in China, competing with Tesla’s Model Y.

Musk and tech giants, politicians seated at the same table

At this Xi–Trump summit, in addition to Musk, others seated at the conference table included Apple CEO Tim Cook (soon to step down), U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump and Xi Jinping held a two-hour meeting to discuss the current tariff ceasefire agreement and the Taiwan sovereignty issue.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that Xi Jinping emphasized to Trump that the Taiwan issue is the most important part of China-U.S. relations. If handled appropriately, bilateral relations can remain stable overall; otherwise, the two countries will have a conflict, pushing the entire China-U.S. relationship into a highly dangerous situation. At the same time, Xi Jinping also stated that the two countries must become partners and avoid becoming rivals.

China’s official media outlet Xinhua also reported that Xi Jinping said China’s door would be opened even wider, welcoming the U.S. to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China, and expressing confidence that American companies would enjoy broader prospects in China.
