Extra moments from the Xi–Trump summit: Musk’s son attends; Lei Jun’s group photo draws attention

The highly anticipated Xi–Trump summit debuted yesterday (5/14), and Tesla and X boss Elon Musk contributed two big buzzworthy highlights to the community.

First, he attended together with his 6-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii, and on social media he revealed in Simplified Chinese that his son is learning Mandarin; second, the expression Musk made when Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun asked to take a selfie with him sparked all kinds of interpretations and discussions on social media.

According to The Sun, Musk brought his 6-year-old son X Æ A-Xii to attend the Xi–Trump summit.

From the footage that was released, X Æ A-Xii is seen wearing dark long trousers, a white shirt, and a light blue traditional silk vest with green embroidery. In his hand, he holds a brown crossbody bag shaped like a dragon. He follows his father into a conference room full of suits and enters while holding his father’s hand.

After the relevant video was shared by the Chinese Twitter account “Li Teacher is not your teacher,” Musk also replied in Simplified Chinese: “My son is learning Mandarin.” This gesture drew a great deal of attention, causing “Musk posting in Chinese” to briefly top China’s Weibo hot search list.

However, X Æ A-Xii’s mother, Canadian singer Grimes, doesn’t like her young son attending various large public events.

After Musk brought X Æ A-Xii to the White House last year to witness Trump signing an executive order, Grimes said she had not known about it and believed her son shouldn’t appear in the public eye like that.

Lei Jun of Xiaomi takes a selfie with Musk

Another topic that sparked buzz on social media was Lei Jun of Xiaomi taking a selfie with Musk. According to Forbes, judging from the released video, when Lei Jun asked to take a photo with Musk, Musk seemed to squint and pull a playful expression, but after the photo was taken, he let out a breath, then looked down and scrolled on his phone.

The seemingly “fun scene of Musk’s social energy running out” quickly spread across Chinese social media, and “Lei Jun and Musk’s photo” also landed in the top three on Weibo’s hot search list. Some netizens humorously commented that Lei Jun lowered his posture in front of his idol.

Lei Jun has expressed admiration for Musk, and he is also one of China’s first owners of the Tesla Model S. And since he led Xiaomi’s investment in the electric vehicle market in 2021, the brand has become one of the competitors in China’s market for Tesla’s Model Y.

At this Xi–Trump summit, in addition to Musk, the others seated at the conference table included Apple CEO Tim Cook (soon to step down), U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump and Xi Jinping held a meeting lasting for two hours to discuss the current tariff ceasefire agreement and the issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that Xi Jinping emphasized to Trump that the Taiwan issue is the most important part of China–U.S. relations. If handled properly, bilateral relations can remain stable as a whole; otherwise, the two countries will have conflicts, putting the entire China–U.S. relationship in a highly dangerous situation. At the same time, Xi Jinping also stated that the two countries must become partners and avoid becoming rivals.

China’s state media, Xinhua, also revealed that during the meeting Xi Jinping said China’s door will open even wider, welcoming the U.S. to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China, and expressing confidence that American companies will enjoy broader prospects in China.
