Recently, I’ve run into several pitfalls again and need to temporarily verify some overseas websites with a phone number. Buying SIM cards is too troublesome, so I started researching various SMS verification platforms. Honestly, these services vary quite a bit—some are lightning-fast, others are so slow they make you question life.

After messing around for a while, I realized that SMS verification is basically just renting a virtual number. The platform assigns you a temporary number, and the verification code appears directly in the backend, so you don’t have to worry about privacy leaks or actually getting a SIM card. They charge per use or offer monthly plans, depending on your needs.

Among the platforms I’ve used, SMS-Activate responds super quickly, usually within 10 seconds, and covers many countries, making it suitable for cross-border testing. Super Cloud SMS is well optimized for domestic number segments, and US numbers are okay too, though sometimes it gets congested during peak times. 5SIM has a clean interface, clear API documentation, and excellent stability. XiaoNiao SMS offers good value, with domestic app testing usually taking 5-15 seconds, though occasionally some numbers get flagged by risk control. Getsmscode is cheap, but may have delays on less popular platforms.

There are a few pitfalls to avoid when using SMS verification platforms: shared numbers are easily used by others, and some services will directly flag risky numbers; delays in receiving verification codes are unavoidable, especially for obscure countries or apps; never choose unknown platforms just to save money—they’re full of traps. Also, this tool is only suitable for temporary use; don’t expect it to be a long-term main number, as privacy and security are not guaranteed.

My experience is that if you’re just testing interfaces, any platform supporting API is enough. But if you need stable registration for an overseas account, it’s best to load multiple numbers so you can switch immediately if one becomes invalid. Some platforms even support one-click number switching, which is really practical. Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best—low latency, full coverage, and high success rates. Have you used any of these platforms? Which do you think is the most reliable?
