I have always wondered how much money there really is in the world. I guess we all think about it sometimes, especially when we look at our bank cards.

But reading about this topic recently, I realized how absurd the scale is. Globally, there are about 37 trillion dollars circulating — that’s all physical money plus deposits in bank accounts. Cash, coins, and banknotes alone amount to about 6.6 trillion dollars. Not bad, right?

But wait, because that’s just the beginning. When we start counting investments, derivatives, and cryptocurrencies, the total already exceeds 1.2 quadrillion dollars. How much money is there in the world in a broader sense? The answer is: tens of trillions, if we include all possible forms of liquid assets and bank deposits.

I often see posts about Bitcoin and wonder what our actual share of that money is. For most of us, it’s a drop in the ocean — but maybe that’s exactly why it’s worth knowing how much money is in the world and where we fit into it.

I wonder how much of these trillions are actually working for us? 🤔
