The question of how much money exists in the world actually opens up a very interesting perspective. The other day, while thinking about this, I realized that most people have no idea about it.
Looking at the numbers, the total amount of money in the world is approximately 37 trillion US dollars. This includes physical cash and all funds held in bank accounts. But the interesting part begins after this. When investment vehicles, derivative products, and cryptocurrency markets are included, this figure exceeds 1.2 quadrillion dollars. So, if you ask how much money is in the world, the answer is actually much more complex.
If we look at physical currency (coins and banknotes), their total value is roughly around 6.6 trillion dollars. However, when we also account for bank deposits and liquid assets, the money supply can be expressed in the tens of trillions.
While contemplating these enormous numbers, I asked myself this question: how much of this money do we have access to? Most people don’t even deal with a tiny fraction of it in their lifetime. The crypto space also offers an interesting alternative at this point — it has the potential to create a more democratic monetary system.
Assets like Bitcoin bring a new perspective in this context. Perhaps, when we remember the future, we can better understand how monetary systems might transform. 🫣
