I just reviewed a ranking of the most expensive cities in the world and Switzerland really dominates everything. Zurich, Geneva, and Basel occupy the top spots, with scores of 112.5, 111.4, and 110.7 respectively. To give some context, New York is the benchmark with 100 points, so these Swiss cities are between 10% and 12% more expensive than there.

The interesting thing is that there are also very expensive cities in the United States. New York ranks as the seventh most expensive globally, followed by Honolulu, San Francisco, and Seattle. It seems that if you want to live in a major city, especially in tech hubs, the cost of living is brutal. But at least in Zurich, salaries compensate: they range between 7,000 and 9,000 Swiss francs per month.

Norway and some Asian cities like Singapore also appear in the top, but nothing compares to Swiss dominance. Of the six most expensive in the world, all six are Swiss. Switzerland is definitely the most expensive country to live in if you're looking for a major city. It's interesting how much the cost of living varies depending on where you settle.
