Recently, I was asked again about virtual numbers for receiving SMS verification codes, so I decided to organize the pitfalls I've encountered recently and share them with everyone.
Honestly, sometimes you really need to use a phone number temporarily, like registering for overseas platforms or testing APIs. Buying a new SIM card isn't practical, so SMS verification platforms become the most convenient choice. Simply put, using virtual numbers to receive SMS verification codes saves effort and protects privacy.
I've used quite a few platforms myself; some fail to receive messages, some have extremely slow delays. In the end, I summarized a few that are pretty good. SMS-Activate is the most user-friendly, with verification codes arriving within about 10 seconds, and it covers many countries, making it especially suitable for cross-border testing. Super Cloud SMS has good optimization for domestic number segments; US numbers arrive in about 10-30 seconds, Chinese numbers even faster, usually within 5-20 seconds. 5SIM's interface is quite clean, and the API documentation is clear; testing Google and Twitter worked without issues.
If you're mainly working within China, Xiaoniao SMS and Getsmscode are also usable. Xiaoniao SMS responds quickly for domestic applications, with verification codes appearing in about 5-15 seconds, and offers good cost performance. Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for light usage, but some less common services might be slower.
A few points to note when using these platforms: most numbers are shared and can be used by others; SMS verification codes may have delays, especially for obscure countries or apps; it's best to choose reputable platforms rather than just going for the cheapest. Also, never use virtual numbers as your long-term primary number—privacy and security are really not guaranteed.
My experience is, if you're just testing APIs, any platform that supports API access is enough. But if you want stable registration on a specific overseas website, it's recommended to buy multiple numbers so you can switch immediately if one expires. Some platforms' "one-click number switch" feature is especially useful and can save a lot of trouble.
Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably, with low latency and wide country coverage. These two can be your first choices. The other options also work, depending on your specific needs.
