I just bought some rings and started researching how to tell if they are real gold because there are many scams out there. I want to share what I learned because it’s easier than it seems.
The first step is to look for the hallmark on the jewelry — if it says 14K, 18K, or 22K, that’s a good sign. 18K is ideal if you want something shiny but durable. For everyday wear, 14K is more resistant even though it has less purity.
Next is the magnet test, which is the quickest. Real gold does not stick to a magnet, so if the jewelry is attracted, that’s the problem. You can also rub it on unglazed ceramic — genuine gold leaves a gold-colored mark, not gray.
Honestly, if you’re not completely confident, take the jewelry to a professional jeweler. They have certified devices and know how to tell if it’s legitimate gold without doubt. It’s worth paying for that verification if it’s an important investment.
What surprised me is that the karat really makes a difference. 24K is almost pure but very soft, 22K is more resistant, and so on. It depends on what you plan to use it for. What do you prefer?
