Recently, I came across a pretty heartbreaking story: someone's wallet was stolen overnight, nearly 50 million yuan. The reason sounds simple and straightforward—buying a fake cold wallet on a certain short video platform. This incident made me realize it's necessary to have a good discussion about this topic.
Many people may not be very clear about what a cold wallet is. In the crypto world, the truly large fund holders mainly store tokens in wallets. First, for long-term holding convenience; second, for relative security. Wallets are divided into two types: cold wallets and hot wallets. Cold wallets are completely offline, like a physical device such as a U disk, which needs to be connected only when in use; hot wallets are always online. From a security perspective, cold wallets are more secure, but hot wallets are more flexible in terms of convenience, so large funds usually choose cold wallets.
So the question is, why do some people still have their assets stolen after buying a cold wallet? Simply put, they bought a fake or tampered wallet. These scams pose as cold wallets or brand-new products, but in reality, they are organized traps with premeditated plans. Your generated private key is monitored by them; their team has technical support behind the scenes. As soon as your funds enter, they can transfer the money away using your key at any time. That’s why cases of cold wallet theft happen repeatedly.
Some might think, isn’t a hot wallet safer? Actually, the logic is the same. The key point isn’t cold versus hot, but the authenticity and legitimacy of the wallet itself. Most hot wallets are software-based, which anyone can download and use. But cold wallets require purchase, and that’s where the risk lies. You must verify the brand and platform carefully—don’t be fooled or just go for those unknown wallets to save a little money.
Regarding specific protective measures, the fundamental reason for cold wallet theft is illegitimate sources. So the first step is to buy from official channels. Second, whether cold or hot, private keys and seed phrases must be properly kept. For cold wallets, physical media like seed phrases and paper wallets should be protected from loss or leaks. For hot wallets, it’s even more important to choose reputable software. Never screenshot your private key or seed phrase, and don’t back them up into any phone apps. The safest method is to write them down on paper and keep them secure.
This incident is actually a good reminder: asset security is no small matter. Especially in this era of information explosion, many scams are very covert. One careless move can lead to being scammed. So, when choosing a wallet, be very cautious. Don’t lower your standards just because of low prices or convenience of the platform. The tragedy of cold wallet theft can be completely avoided as long as you pay enough attention to security.
