You ever wonder what 'degen' actually means in crypto? I used to think it was just some random insult, but turns out there's a whole culture and history behind it.

So basically, degen comes from 'degenerate' - originally gambling slang for people who bet recklessly. In crypto, we took that term and ran with it. Degen traders are the ones making massive leveraged bets, chasing 100x gains on shitcoins, basically throwing caution to the wind. They're the people who see a 50% pump and think 'I should go all in with 5x leverage' - you know the type.

What's wild is that a lot of the crypto community actually wears the degen label as a badge of honor now. Instead of being ashamed, people are like 'yeah I'm a degen, and I'm proud of it.' These are the hardcore believers who dump money into projects they believe in, actively contribute to communities, and stay loyal even when things go south. There's something almost admirable about that level of commitment, even if it's completely reckless from a financial standpoint.

But here's where it gets darker - the degen meaning has also come to describe people running pump and dump schemes in DeFi. They'll buy a coin, pump the price, get retail investors excited, then dump their bags and disappear. That's the toxic side of degen culture. These schemes create fake hype around worthless projects and actually damage legitimate projects trying to compete.

The thing about degen trading is it can be absolutely brutal. Leverage works both ways - yeah, you can make insane profits fast, but you can lose everything just as quickly. Most degens trade on emotion and short-term price action instead of fundamentals. One bad liquidation and you're wiped out. The volatility in crypto is already extreme, but add leverage on top of that and you're basically gambling.

So what's the verdict? I'd say degen culture is complicated. On one hand, you've got passionate community members who are willing to take risks and support projects they believe in. On the other hand, you've got people running scams and making reckless financial decisions that hurt themselves and others. The degen meaning kind of encompasses both - it's not inherently good or bad, it's just part of how crypto operates.
