Recently, I was asked about registering overseas accounts again. To be honest, this scenario is really common—when you don't want to get a new SIM card, just use a virtual number temporarily. I've run into many pitfalls before; some SMS platforms simply don't receive messages, others have delays of half a day. Only later did I figure out which ones are reliable.
In fact, SMS receiving platforms are services that rent virtual phone numbers to receive verification codes, covering various country codes. After registration, just select a country number and bind it to the target website; the verification code will appear directly on the page. The biggest difference from regular phone numbers is that they charge per use, and some even support monthly packages. The benefit of using SMS platforms is that they protect privacy and make testing easier—much more convenient than getting a new SIM card.
Two relatively stable platforms I’ve used are SMS-Activate and 5SIM. Verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, and they cover all countries. For domestic applications, Xiaoniao SMS and Super Cloud SMS are good options. US numbers typically take 10-30 seconds, while Chinese numbers are even faster, around 5-20 seconds. Getsmscode is inexpensive and suitable for light users. I’ve tested all these SMS platforms, and their stability is quite good.
When using these platforms, be aware that some numbers are shared and may have been registered before. For less common countries or apps, there might be delays, so it’s recommended to prepare several numbers as backups. Additionally, some platforms support one-click number switching, which is very practical—if a number becomes invalid, you can switch immediately. If you're just testing an API, choosing a platform that supports API access is enough, but for stable registration on a specific website, it’s better to load several accounts.
Finally, a reminder: these tools are meant to protect privacy, prevent spam, and register secondary accounts. Do not use them for illegal activities. Choose reputable, active SMS platforms—don’t just buy cheap ones blindly.
