Apple and OpenAI have strained relations; the latter plans to resort to legal action.

Gold Financial reports that on May 15, according to informed sources, the two-year partnership between Apple (AAPL.O) and OpenAI has become strained, as this AI startup has failed to achieve the expected benefits from the deal with Apple and is now preparing to take potential legal action. OpenAI’s lawyers are actively working with an external law firm to explore a range of options that could be formally implemented in the near future. The sources say this may include sending a notice of alleged breach of contract to Apple, but not necessarily filing a full lawsuit at the outset. OpenAI believes that integrating ChatGPT into Apple’s software should have attracted more users to subscribe to the chatbot. It also hopes to embed ChatGPT more deeply into more Apple applications and to position it prominently within Siri. However, Apple’s use of OpenAI’s technology in its operating system remains limited, and related features are hard to find. OpenAI executives believe that as the company commits to an initial public offering, this approach could eventually become a major revenue source. According to user research conducted by this AI startup, most Apple customers prefer to use a standalone ChatGPT app rather than access OpenAI’s technology through Siri and other Apple services.
