Israel and Lebanon held their third round of direct talks in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, according to officials from both sides. The purpose of this round of talks is to disarm Hezbollah in Lebanon and to reach an agreement with the Lebanese government to establish formal diplomatic relations.

Israeli officials stated that the talks took place at the U.S. State Department, with the Israeli delegation consisting of Ambassador Yechiel Leiter and senior security officials. The Lebanese delegation included Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad and former Ambassador Simon Karam. U.S. officials were also present.

Israel hopes to retain the freedom to carry out air and ground military strikes against Hezbollah before reaching an agreement. The Lebanese government, on the other hand, demands that Israel withdraw from Lebanese territory, cease attacks on Lebanon, and stop damaging villages near the temporary Lebanon-Israel border.

Israel indicated that the talks are expected to continue on Friday, but it is currently unclear whether the two sides are close to reaching a consensus.

Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc stated that, in the face of Israeli arrogance and tyranny, as well as U.S. cover and support, Lebanese authorities continue to adopt a retreating and weak stance, criticizing the authorities for relying on weak diplomatic means to restore rights, end occupation, and maintain national sovereignty.

Since March 2, Israel has caused the deaths of 2,896 people and injured 8,824 in conflicts in Lebanon.
