Remember that case from a few years back? Nikolai Mushegian, the MakerDAO co-founder, found dead on a Puerto Rico beach back in 2022. Still one of the more unsettling stories in crypto history if you ask me.
So here's what went down. The guy was 29, and he washed up on Condado Beach in San Juan on October 28th. But here's where it gets weird - just hours before his body was found, he'd posted some pretty intense tweets. He was claiming that intelligence agencies, CIA, Mossad, and what he called a "pedo elite" were running some kind of trafficking and blackmail operation. And according to him, they had him in their crosshairs, planning to frame and torture him.
When authorities found him, they said there were no obvious signs of foul play. Small cut on his head, nothing else. The beach itself is known for being dangerous - strong currents, history of drownings. Pretty straightforward explanation on the surface.
But then you hear from people who actually knew Nikolai Mushegian. They described him as brilliant, but also mentioned he'd been dealing with serious mental health struggles. Some people in the space, including Brock Pierce, suggested it might have been self-inflicted. Others? They weren't buying it. The timing felt off to them - those tweets, then his death hours later.
The crypto community never really let this one go. You still see discussions about it, theories about what actually happened. Was it an accident on a dangerous beach? Was it something else? The official investigation didn't provide the clarity people were looking for, so the speculation just kept going.
It's one of those cases that reminds you how complex things can get when mental health, conspiracy thinking, and actual danger all intersect. Tragic situation all around.
