just found out Starlink's doing something pretty wild - free satellite texting on a bunch of phones now. Elon Musk's internet service is letting you connect directly without needing their antenna or paying for a plan, which honestly changes things for people in remote areas.
so it's not every phone, but if you've got an iPhone 14 or newer, most recent Pixels, newer Samsung Galaxy models (A14 and up, or S21 onwards), or Motorola phones from 2024 onward, you're eligible. basically they're rolling this out to pretty current devices.
right now you can only do texts, share your location, and call 911 if needed - no internet browsing or calls yet. but they're already talking about adding voice and full internet access in the next phase, which would be a game changer for people stuck without normal network coverage.
the setup's straightforward too, just register on the Starlink website and you're in. not gonna lie, the idea of having emergency contact capability anywhere on the planet without paying extra is kind of a big deal. wondering if this actually changes the coverage game or if it's more of a niche thing for now
