Recently, I’ve noticed on Discord and Twitter that many newcomers to the crypto space are confused by the jargon. What do terms like HODL, FUD, WAGMI actually mean? I’ve decided to organize them because understanding these terms, especially hodl, and other jargon can really help you avoid many detours.
Let’s start with the most classic—HODL. This word originally was a typo for “hold,” but now it has become a symbol for crypto believers. Simply put: after buying cryptocurrencies, no matter how the market fluctuates, you hold tight and don’t let go. When BTC drops 15%, 20%, HODLers remain as steady as a rock. This isn’t gambling mentality, but faith in the long-term trend. I’ve seen many people who, by understanding the core meaning of hodl—long-term holding—have achieved wealth growth after several bear market cycles.
Next is FUD—Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. This term describes negative news in the market, sometimes genuine risk warnings, but more often exaggerated or spread rumors. You might see a big influencer post a tweet that instantly triggers a sell-off. That’s classic FUD manipulation. Learning to identify FUD versus real bad news is a must for mature investors.
Conversely, WAGMI—We’re All Gonna Make It. This is the purest optimistic spirit of the crypto community. During a bull market, new projects launching, or your holdings skyrocketing, you’ll see this term on Twitter and Discord. It represents community solidarity and shared belief in the future. Sometimes this spirit can be inspiring, but beware of it turning into blind optimism.
There are also some everyday terms worth knowing. GM and GN are almost daily greetings in the crypto community—Good Morning and Good Night. It seems simple, but these small interactions help build community cohesion. DYOR—Do Your Own Research—is more practical. Don’t blindly follow a KOL’s advice; you must deeply understand the project fundamentals yourself. Lastly, REKT—being completely wrecked. When someone buys high and sells low, they’re said to be REKT.
Honestly, mastering these terms isn’t just about appearing professional in the community; more importantly, they represent market psychology and risk awareness behind them. Next time you see market volatility on an exchange or hear various voices in the community, you’ll understand what’s really happening. Understanding hodl, recognizing FUD, maintaining the WAGMI spirit without blind optimism—this is the wisdom for long-term survival in the crypto world.
