Interesting fact I noticed — when people talk about Islam, many imagine the Middle East, but in reality, it's quite different. Most of the largest Muslim communities are actually in other regions, in Asia.
It turns out that Asian Muslim countries are the main center of Islam in the world. Indonesia leads the list with 242 million believers (87% of the population). That’s more than in any other country, can you imagine? Next is Pakistan with 235 million (96%), then India with 213 million, although that only accounts for 15% of the total population.
If you look at the top Muslim countries by the number of believers, the list looks like this: Bangladesh (25M), Nigeria (22M), Egypt (1.8B), Iran (88M), Turkey (84M). Then come Sudan, Algeria, Iraq, Afghanistan — all with very high percentages of believers.
Things get even more interesting from there. About 25 million Muslims live in China, although that’s only 1.4% of the population. Ethiopia has 37 million (31.3%), Tanzania 22 million (34.1%). Even in countries where Islam is not the majority, Muslim communities remain significant in absolute numbers.
Data from Pew Research Center (2025) shows that the geographic distribution of religion is much more complex than it appears at first glance. Muslim countries in Asia and Africa contain the overwhelming majority of Islam’s followers worldwide.
The statistics are truly impressive — over 1.8 billion people. And most of this population is concentrated precisely in Asian regions, not where many are used to associating it.
