You probably know Dogecoin, but did you know how it all started? I recently dug into the history of this project and it's honestly fascinating.
So Billy Markus, born in 1983 in Portland, Oregon, is the guy behind all this. Before becoming a prominent figure in the crypto world, he worked at IBM as a senior software engineer. Not exactly the profile of a crypto revolutionary you might imagine, right?
What’s crazy is that Billy Markus and his buddy Jackson Palmer had no intention of creating a serious project. In late 2013, they launched Dogecoin as a pure joke, a mockery of all those overly serious crypto projects like Bitcoin and Litecoin. It was supposed to be a funny thing, period.
But then, the market decided otherwise. What Billy Markus and Palmer thought was a small prank exploded into becoming one of the most recognizable cryptocurrencies in the world. Honestly, I’m not sure they could have predicted that in 2013.
What intrigues me is that Billy Markus has remained relatively discreet compared to other founders. He hasn't sought the spotlight like many in the industry. On X (formerly Twitter), under the pseudonym Shibetoshi Nakamoto, he has amassed over 2.1 million followers since his start in 2009. He remains active on the platform, sharing his market observations.
Billy Markus and Dogecoin’s journey remains one of the most unlikely stories in crypto. A project launched for fun that ended up making history. Not bad for a start, right?
