A black swan is a phenomenon I have been observing in the crypto market for several years, and each time it reminds me of how little we actually control. This concept was introduced by Nassim Taleb — rare, unpredictable events with a huge impact, which people then try to rationalize.
In crypto, this means unexpected shocks that instantly turn the market upside down. A black swan is not just a price drop — it’s a complete reformatting of trust, liquidity, and investor behavior. Volatility increases exponentially, and often those who suffer are people who didn’t even realize what risks they were exposing themselves to.
I remember a few such moments. COVID-19 in 2020 suddenly devastated the global finances, and crypto was no exception. Then 2022 — the collapse of FTX, one of the largest exchanges, simply went bankrupt, and Bitcoin along with the market fell. That same year, the Terra/Luna ecosystem collapsed, destroying tens of billions of dollars and all faith in algorithmic stablecoins. China repeatedly banned mining and trading, causing sharp declines. And there was also the moment when Bitcoin, from a peak of $64,000, dropped below $30,000 in a few weeks — the panic was incredible.
A black swan, essentially, is a test of how prepared your portfolio is for a shock. When such events happen, liquidity disappears, markets freeze, and buying or selling an asset becomes impossible. Investors’ trust drops, especially in affected projects. But opportunities also arise — big players accumulate assets at low prices, while ordinary people lose their savings.
I believe every crypto investor should understand that a black swan is not a question of “if,” but of “when.” It’s not worth putting everything into one asset or one segment. Diversification is not just a recommendation — it’s a necessity. Always keep part of your capital in stablecoins or traditional assets. Follow the news, understand what could trigger a fall, but don’t panic when it happens. It’s a natural part of the market. On Gate.io, you can set up a portfolio that will be resilient to such shocks if you distribute your assets properly.
