Just saw that Bitcoin hit a new all-time high recently, which got me curious about the early days. Turns out the 2009 bitcoin price was absolutely insane to think about now. Back in October 2009, when the first trades happened, people were exchanging 1,309 BTC for just $1. That's roughly $0.00764 per coin. Wild, right?
I started digging through the price history and the numbers are pretty mind-blowing. If you'd grabbed 10 BTC at the start of trading in 2009 and held until now, you'd be sitting on nearly $800k in gains. The journey wasn't smooth though. Bitcoin went from $0.30 in late 2010 to $4.25 by end of 2011. Then 2013 happened and it exploded 5,457% in a single year, hitting $751. People were losing their minds.
The volatility was crazy during 2014-2015 with a 57% crash, but if you stayed patient through 2016-2017, Bitcoin ran from $430 to over $14k. Even the brutal 2018 bear market that took it down 73% didn't wipe out long-term holders. By 2020, it was already at $28k, and 2021 pushed it near $69k before the 2022 crash.
Looking at where we are now in 2026, Bitcoin has been on another run. The current price is sitting around $79.75K with a history high of $126.08K. If someone bought just 10 BTC on January 1st this year, they'd already be up over half a million. The 2009 bitcoin price seems like ancient history when you see what's happened since then. Makes you wonder what the next cycle will look like.
