The wave of departures at xAI continues: Grok real-time search core leader resigns
According to Beating Monitoring, the head of the xAI search and factual post-training team, Tianyi Zhang, announced his departure today on X. He led the development of Grok’s real-time search and Agent functions over the past year. His core task was to ensure that Grok could accurately retrieve information and avoid being misled by rumors, producing “hallucinations,” when facing the massive, real-time fragmented information on the X platform. This is also the underlying technical pillar of his personal favorite “Grok Instant Mode.”
Tianyi Zhang’s departure is just the latest example of recent large-scale talent loss at xAI. According to Fast Company, about 80 personnel have left the lab in the past year. More notably, the startup team has now been completely emptied, with all co-founders (including Jimmy Ba, Tony Wu, etc.) having left, except Elon Musk. Additionally, several new executives, including the CFO and infrastructure head, have also recently resigned.
Elon Musk previously responded that this was a restructuring to “accelerate execution” and compared it to the “rebuilding” of early Tesla.
