I just reread about what cyberpunk is and realized that this genre is actually deeper than I thought. It’s not just movies with flashing neon lights, but a way for humans to reflect on a future where technology is gradually taking control of us.

What exactly is cyberpunk? It is a branch of science fiction imagining a dystopian world, where advanced technology has surpassed human control. In these worlds, large corporations and governments have accumulated enormous power, dividing society into two clear classes — those with access to high-end technology and those left behind.

What makes cyberpunk different is that it’s not just about technology. This genre explores the darker sides of progress — virtual reality abuse, ruthless artificial intelligence, implants that invade privacy. The main characters are often hackers, rebels using technical skills to fight against power structures. I like how this genre raises complex ethical questions that we may soon face.

If you’ve never heard of what cyberpunk is, classic works like William Gibson’s Neuromancer or the movie Blade Runner will help you understand. The Deus Ex game series is also a great example of how this genre is portrayed. Gloomy cityscapes, vibrant neon lights, ruined buildings — these are typical settings, creating a completely unique atmosphere.

The beauty of cyberpunk is that it continues to evolve over time. Recently, with the explosion of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, a new branch called blockchainpunk has emerged. This genre explores both the opportunities and risks of these decentralized technologies. What is cyberpunk in the modern context? It’s how we reflect on a future where technology is both a savior and a disaster.

I believe that cyberpunk will continue to be meaningful in the coming years. As technology keeps advancing, and concerns about privacy and security grow, the ideas explored by this genre will become even sharper. It helps us see the worst-case scenarios so we can avoid them, or at least prepare mentally. That’s why the question of what cyberpunk is remains a thought-provoking one for all of us.
