I've noticed that in the crypto community, they constantly discuss pump and dump schemes, but many newcomers don't quite understand how these schemes actually work. I decided to figure it out and share my observations.
In general, pump and dump are some of the most dangerous manipulations in the market. The essence is simple: a group coordinates the purchase of an asset, creating the impression of increasing demand. The price starts soaring, attracting beginners who hope to profit from the quick movement. They see green candles, FOMO takes over, and they jump into a position. That's where everything begins.
When the price is sufficiently inflated, manipulators start selling massively. This is the second stage — the dump. The price crashes, panic spreads across the market, and beginners lose their money. Those who didn't manage to exit are left with losses. The scheme is ancient, but in crypto, it works especially effectively due to market volatility and emotionality.
How does this happen exactly? Manipulators use social media, Telegram channels, sometimes even create fake news. They spread information about the asset, hype it up, create the impression that this is the next big move. Trading volumes increase, people buy, and the price skyrockets. Then everything collapses.
What worries me is that the consequences of this affect not only individual investors. Pump and dump schemes undermine trust in the market, increase volatility, and attract the attention of regulators. This can even provoke investigations and bans on certain assets.
How to protect yourself? You need to be critical and not blindly trust advice from the internet, especially if it comes from dubious sources. Conduct fundamental analysis, look at trading volumes, study projects before investing money. And remember: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
In general, pump and dump are not just schemes for scammers to get rich; they pose a serious risk to each of us. Be attentive, study the market, and don't succumb to emotions. This is the foundation of survival in crypto.
