Just came across this wild story about Gilbert Armenta getting five years in federal prison. The guy was essentially the right hand to Ruja Ignatova, the so-called Cryptoqueen who basically vanished after running one of the biggest crypto scams ever.

So here's the thing - OneCoin was this massive Ponzi scheme that started in Bulgaria back in 2014 and ended up stealing nearly $4 billion from investors. People were convinced they were buying into legitimate digital assets, but it was all fake. The scheme ran by getting investors to buy 'educational packages' ranging from 100 to 118,000 euros, and they'd get tokens in return that supposedly could be traded on an internal marketplace. Except the whole thing was rigged.

Gilbert Armenta wasn't just a bystander though. He was Ignatova's ex-boyfriend and actively involved in moving the stolen money around. The guy allegedly laundered $300 million from the scheme, which is absolutely insane. After getting caught, he pleaded guilty to money laundering, extortion, and wire fraud back in 2018. His lawyers tried to spin it as him being manipulated by his relationship with Ignatova - claiming she had people spy on him and controlled him. Whether that's true or not, the sentencing still happened.

What's crazy is what Armenta did with the laundered cash. He bought luxury items like jet planes, purchased a Georgian bank, and basically lived large while the money came from defrauded investors. When authorities caught up with him, he tried to hide assets by selling off the plane and even stealing a $5 million check. The guy also bribed Mexican businesses and gambled away investor money.

Meanwhile, Ruja Ignatova - the actual mastermind - just disappeared in 2017 while in Athens, Greece. She's still on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list with a $100,000 bounty on her head. Some people think she's dead, others believe she's hiding somewhere on a yacht in the Mediterranean where international waters make it harder for authorities to reach her. The fact that a $15 million penthouse she owned in Kensington, London resurfaced on the market a couple years back has people wondering if she's still alive and moving assets.

The whole OneCoin saga is honestly one of the most elaborate crypto frauds we've seen. Authorities in multiple European countries warned people about it, but millions still got caught up. Gilbert Armenta's sentencing is at least some justice, but the real question everyone's asking is whether they'll ever actually find Ignatova.
