UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay plans to resign to run for Labour Party leader
After the ruling Labour Party suffered a crushing defeat in local elections, Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer faces mounting pressure to step down. According to The Times, citing allies of Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Streeting is prepared to resign and run for Labour Party leader.
Streeting is widely seen as a potential rival to Starmer. Privately, he has already made clear that he will run for Labour Party leader, plans to resign as soon as Thursday at the earliest, and has already begun preparing to secure support from Labour MPs in the House of Commons.
On Wednesday, Streeting went to 10 Downing Street in London to meet with Starmer for less than 20 minutes. After the meeting, he did not respond to questions from reporters. A Starmer spokesperson said that Starmer is “full of confidence” in Streeting.
The BBC reported that in the House of Commons there are already 86 Labour MPs calling on Starmer to resign or to set out a resignation timetable. Several government department ministerial aides have resigned to pressure him, but at the same time multiple cabinet ministers have stated their support for Starmer.
