I just came across an interesting chart pattern that many traders overlook, but can actually be quite valuable: the bull flag. This pattern is especially common in the crypto space and can help you interpret upward trends correctly.

How does it all work? The bull flag consists of two clear phases. First comes the flagpole—a strong, steep price increase over a short period. This is the phase where buying pressure is really high, and positive news or high volume push the price upward. Then follows the flag itself, which is a consolidation phase where the price moves sideways or slightly downward but stays within a relatively narrow range. That’s the interesting part: the market takes a breather but doesn’t lose its bullish momentum.

If you then see a breakout from this consolidation zone—ideally with increased volume—it confirms the continuation of the upward trend. That’s the moment when many traders watch closely and enter their long positions.

Why is this pattern so important? Well, a bull flag signals genuine market strength. It differs from reversal patterns in that it doesn’t indicate a trend reversal but rather the continuation of an existing upward trend. For traders, this means: the uptrend isn’t over yet; it’s just a brief pause.

In the crypto world, you see these patterns all the time. Think of Bitcoin or major altcoins during their rallies. For example: Bitcoin rises from $25,000 to $30,000 in a few days (the flagpole), then consolidates between $29,000 and $30,000 (the flag), and a breakout above $30,000 could target $35,000 or higher. That’s exactly how the bull flag works in practice.

I use this pattern together with other signals and solid risk management. It doesn’t guarantee every trade will be successful, but combined with the right strategy, it can be a pretty reliable tool. Many traders I know swear by this pattern to time upward moves correctly.

Have you already traded with bull flags? I’d be interested to hear about your experiences. The current market situation definitely offers some interesting setups to watch on Gate.
