Something that has always caught my attention is how Elon Musk has managed to influence cryptocurrency markets with just a tweet. The guy is a billionaire, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and has basically become a sort of oracle in the crypto world. But the real question is: which cryptocurrencies does he actually hold in his portfolio and why?
Let's start with Bitcoin. Back in 2021, Tesla announced an investment of 1.5 billion dollars in BTC, which was quite a significant move. Although the company has sold most of those holdings, Musk has made it clear that he personally still owns Bitcoin. He sees it as a store of value, the digital gold of the future. And with the current price hovering around $79,620 and controlling over 57% of the crypto market, it's easy to understand why.
Then there's Ethereum, the second-largest coin by market capitalization. During the 2021 The ₿ Word conference, Musk confirmed that he also has ETH in his portfolio. The reason is quite logical: Ethereum is the foundation of DeFi, NFTs, and virtually all innovative blockchain applications. With a current price of $2,260 and a market cap of nearly $273 billion, it’s a key player in the crypto space.
But if we talk about Musk’s true passion for cryptocurrencies, we have to discuss Dogecoin. DOGE is literally his favorite, and he doesn’t hide it. He has called Dogecoin "the people's cryptocurrency," promoted its use in Tesla and SpaceX, and basically made DOGE impossible to ignore. Musk appreciates its playful, meme-based aspect, but also believes it has real potential as a medium of exchange due to its low fees. It’s currently trading at $0.11 with a 1.97% increase in the last 24 hours.
Now, there’s a lot of speculation about other coins. Although Musk has denied owning Shiba Inu, his tweets about dogs and related memes have caused significant movements in SHIB. The same goes for Floki Inu, named after Musk’s Shiba Inu dog. Without confirmed evidence of ownership, his mentions have generated considerable interest.
What’s interesting about all this is that Musk has demonstrated a pretty clear vision of which cryptocurrencies have real potential. Bitcoin as a store of value, Ethereum as infrastructure, Dogecoin as an accessible medium of exchange. If you’re exploring these cryptocurrencies, Gate is a good place to follow their movements and analyze market trends.
