Recently, someone asked me about phone number verification services, so I might as well share all the pitfalls I've encountered. Honestly, finding a reliable virtual number platform is not easy; I've tried several before, some of which couldn't receive texts at all, others had outrageous delays, and only later did I figure out the tricks.

A verification platform is basically a service that rents virtual phone numbers to receive verification codes. No need to buy SIM cards; after registration, select the country, and the number is directly pushed to the backend, with the verification code displayed. It charges per use, and there are also monthly plans, depending on how you use it. Compared to using real numbers, these virtual numbers can protect privacy and are convenient for testing.

From my personal experience, the most stable ones are these: SMS-Activate is super fast, usually within 10 seconds, and covers all countries; Super Cloud SMS is well optimized for US and Chinese number segments, with US numbers arriving in 10–30 seconds, Chinese numbers even faster, though sometimes it gets stuck during peak times; 5SIM has a user-friendly interface, clear API documentation, and can normally receive codes from Google, Twitter, and others; Xiaoniao Verification is especially friendly for domestic apps, usually within 5–15 seconds, and offers good value; Getsmscode is cheap, suitable for light users, mainly targeting domestic applications.

When using virtual numbers, watch out for a few pitfalls. Shared numbers are easily used by others, sometimes showing "already registered"; obscure platforms or apps may have delays; most importantly, don’t just pick the cheapest option randomly—trustworthy platforms are more reliable; never use them as long-term primary numbers, as privacy and security are not guaranteed.

My experience is that if you're just testing interfaces, any platform supporting API is fine; but if you want stable registration on a specific overseas site, it's best to buy multiple numbers and switch immediately if one becomes invalid. Some platforms also support "one-click number switching," which is super practical and saves a lot of trouble. Based on my experience, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the most stably overall, with low latency, full virtual number coverage, and I recommend trying them first.
