1917 — Three shepherd children (kids) say they saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary over an oak tree in Cova da Iria, in Fatima, Portugal.

1950 — The inaugural race of the Formula 1 World Championship is held at Silverstone. The race is won by Giuseppe Farina, who would go on to become the inaugural champion that year.

1967 — TV Bandeirantes goes on air in São Paulo.

1940 — World War II: Germany begins the conquest of France as the German army crosses the Meuse. Winston Churchill delivers his “blood, sweat, and tears” speech in the UK House of Commons.

1981 — Mehmet Ali Ağca attempts to assassinate Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Square, in Vatican City. The pope survives after undergoing surgery at the Gemelli Polyclinic.
