After hanging out in the crypto community for a while, you'll realize it's basically a different language. Not understanding these terms can really put you at a disadvantage.
The most commonly heard one is FUD. Actually, FUD is very simple—it's an abbreviation for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. Basically, someone tries to scare you into selling by spreading bad news or rumors. When the market fluctuates, all kinds of FUD flood in—some are genuine risk warnings, but more often it's people manipulating emotions. You need to learn how to tell the difference, or you'll easily get shaken out.
Then there's HODL. This term is the most interesting—it’s actually a typo of "hold," which later became a symbol of faith. HODL means buying coins and holding tight regardless of how the market swings. When everyone is panicking and selling, true HODLers stay calm and wait. On days when BTC drops 15%, HODLers will say "this is just noise," and continue sleeping soundly.
If HODL represents individual perseverance, WAGMI stands for community strength. "We’re all going to succeed"—this is the warmest cheer in the crypto community. During bull markets and new project launches, everyone encourages each other with WAGMI. It’s not just a slogan; it’s a collective belief.
Other terms are also quite interesting. GM and GN (Good Morning and Good Night) seem simple, but on Discord and Twitter, these greetings actually help build a sense of community. DYOR (Do Your Own Research) is the most important reminder—don’t follow blindly; even the best projects need your own careful review. REKT means being badly taught a lesson by the market—those painful experiences of buying high and selling low.
Honestly, learning these slang terms isn’t just to appear professional; more importantly, it’s to understand the culture of the crypto community. Next time you see discussions about FUD or someone posting WAGMI in the community, you’ll truly understand what’s behind it. That way, during market fluctuations, you can stay clear-headed and make rational decisions. After all, in this volatile market, only those who understand the language and culture can go further.
