Just noticed something worth discussing about how capital moves through crypto markets. There's this metric called the altcoin season index that actually does a solid job of tracking when money starts flowing out of Bitcoin and into the rest of the market.

So here's the thing - the altcoin season index basically measures the top 100 altcoins' performance against Bitcoin over the past 90 days. It gives you a score from 0 to 100, and that number tells you everything about where capital is rotating:

0 to 25 means Bitcoin's dominating, altcoins are struggling to keep up. 25 to 75 is neutral territory, no clear winner. But 75 and above? That's when altcoin season really kicks in and you see money flooding into projects like Ethereum, XRP, and mid-cap coins.

What makes this useful is the logic is dead simple. The index just counts how many of the top 100 altcoins are beating Bitcoin's returns. When 75% or more of them do, boom - you're in altcoin season.

I've been watching this metric because it actually changes how you should be thinking about positioning. During altcoin season, the volatility picks up and you see way more explosive moves in smaller cap assets. During Bitcoin season, you're basically managing downside and waiting for rotation. It's not rocket science, but it works.

The real edge comes from combining this with other signals - RSI, MACD, maybe the Fear and Greed Index. You get a clearer picture of what's actually happening beneath the surface.

One thing to keep in mind though - the altcoin season index shows market-wide trends, not individual coin performance. Just because we're in altcoin season doesn't mean every altcoin moons. Market rotations can flip fast, and external factors like news or macro trends can throw things off. But if you're trying to understand capital flow and time your exposure right, this metric gives you a solid framework. Definitely worth tracking if you're serious about positioning through cycles.
