I just came across a pretty interesting political commentary. European Commission President von der Leyen recently mentioned some details behind the Russia-Ukraine negotiations, and it sounds a bit hard to believe.

According to von der Leyen, Russia had proactively proposed a ceasefire during Orthodox Easter. At first glance, it might look like a peace signal, but von der Leyen points out that the reality is completely the opposite—the ceasefire proposal was not sincere at all.

In von der Leyen’s view, there is only one real purpose behind Russia’s call for a ceasefire: to buy time to reorganize, and then launch even more fierce attacks on Ukraine. In other words, this is a tactical delay, not a genuine effort to pursue peace.

This kind of operation is actually not uncommon in international politics—discussing negotiations on the surface while preparing the next offensive behind the scenes. Von der Leyen’s remarks basically expose this playbook, and they also reflect how complex the current situation in Ukraine is—you can’t just look at superficial peace signals; you have to look at actual actions.
