Techub News reports that, according to U.Today, Ripple's Chief Technology Officer Emeritus (CTO Emeritus) David Schwartz explained that XRP tokens are not used in the XRP Ledger (XRPL) consensus mechanism. He elaborated that when XRPL was developed, the PoS mechanism had not yet appeared, and using XRP to drive consensus would inevitably allow Ripple to control that mechanism. The XRP Ledger relies on a "stakeholder selection" mechanism, where participants choose trusted validators to reach consensus. According to his 2020 lecture, artificial mining or staking rewards are attacks on natural stakeholders, and the only reason to participate in the system is to ensure its reliable operation.
