Recently, I was bothered again by the issue of SMS verification codes, so I decided to organize the SMS receiving platforms I’ve used over the years. Honestly, sometimes you just need a temporary phone number to register for overseas websites or test APIs. Buying SIM cards is too troublesome, so virtual numbers for receiving codes become the easiest solution.
I’ve encountered many pitfalls before—some platforms simply don’t receive messages, others have delays of half a day, and only after testing did I figure out which ones are more reliable. In simple terms, SMS receiving platforms are about renting virtual phone numbers to receive verification codes, protecting privacy and making testing more convenient.
SMS-Activate is the most frequently used by me; verification codes usually arrive within 10 seconds, and it covers all countries, making cross-border application testing especially easy. Super Cloud SMS’s US number ranges are also good, typically arriving in about 10-30 seconds, even Chinese number ranges can sometimes receive within 5-20 seconds, though peak times may be slower. 5SIM’s interface is quite user-friendly, and their API documentation is clear; registering for Google, Twitter, and others is no problem. For domestic applications, Xiaoniao SMS offers good cost performance, with common services delivering verification codes in 5-15 seconds, but occasionally numbers may be flagged by risk control—just switch to a different number range. Getsmscode is cheap and suitable for light users, but may have delays on less popular platforms.
A few points to note when using SMS receiving platforms: some numbers are shared and may have been registered before; verification codes can indeed be delayed, especially for less common countries; never choose platforms just because they’re cheap. My experience is, if you’re only testing APIs, just pick one that supports API access; but if you need stable registration on a specific website, it’s best to load multiple numbers for switching. Some platforms support one-click number switching, which is very practical. Also, it’s recommended to prepare 2-3 backup numbers to effectively avoid account blocking.
