You know, I recently remembered that the world of cryptocurrencies didn't start that long ago, and it's worth looking at the origins. The very first cryptocurrency is, of course, Bitcoin, which appeared in 2009 thanks to the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto. No one still really knows who he was, but he launched the revolution that changed the entire financial world.

After Bitcoin, other projects began to emerge. Namecoin in 2011 tried to solve the problem of decentralized domain names, and in the same year, Charlie Lee released Litecoin as a faster alternative. Then Ripple in 2012 positioned itself as a bridge between banks and financial institutions for quick international transfers.

Interestingly, Peercoin also appeared in 2012 and became the first to combine Proof of Work and Proof of Stake. But the real breakthrough happened when Nxt was launched in 2013 — it was the first blockchain fully operating on PoS without PoW. Also in 2013, Dogecoin appeared as a joke, but it unexpectedly gained a huge community and even support from celebrities.

By 2014, the cryptocurrency ecosystem was already quite developed. Monero focused on privacy and anonymity, while Dash, which was initially called Xcoin and then Darkcoin, also emphasized confidentiality and speed. But the very first cryptocurrency in terms of innovation was still Bitcoin — it set the trend, and others built upon it.

And then in 2015, everything changed with the arrival of Ethereum. It was the first blockchain with built-in support for smart contracts, opening up completely new possibilities. If Bitcoin was about money, then Ethereum became about applications. That’s the story of development from the very first cryptocurrency to a full-fledged blockchain ecosystem. Some of these projects are still relevant and hold serious positions in the market.
