April Price Index Came In High at 3.8
The April 2026 US Price Index rose 3.8% from a year ago.
This is the quickest rise since May 2023 and above the 3.3% gain in March.
Month to month, prices rose 0.6% in April.
Core prices, with food and energy out, rose 2.8% from a year ago and 0.4% from last month.
Energy was the main driver, up 3.8% for the month and 17.9% from a year ago.
Gas rose 5.4% in April and 28.4% from a year ago.
Food rose 0.5% for the month and 3.2% from a year ago.
Why Did It Come In High?
The ongoing issue tied to Iran raised oil supply risk through the Strait of Hormuz.
This pushed up gas, fuel, and jet fuel costs across the board.
Higher move and ship costs then fed into food goods and services.
Air fares and clothes also added to the monthly gain.
How Could Digital Assets Be Moved?
Hot price data cuts the odds of near-term rate cuts and lifts talk of rate hikes.
High rates lift the dollar and bond yields, and that can weigh on risk assets like digital coins.
At the same time, some buyers use Bitcoin and other digital coins as a hedge when price gains run above pay gains.
Real pay fell 0.5% for the month, which puts stress on home budgets.
How May Markets Shift?
Bond yields rose with the data, as traders priced in a longer hold on rule shifts.
Stocks fell, with the S&P 500 down 0.6% and the tech-heavy index off 1.4% that day.
Digital assets often track big moves, so a firm dollar and higher yields may lead to short-term sells.
If energy costs keep rising and core price gains stay firm, risk assets may stay shaky.
If oil prices ease and monthly core reads cool, digital assets may see buy flow on relief.
What To Track?
Next price and job reports will show if price stress keeps rising.
Oil and gas moves, since energy made up 40% of the monthly gain, link to world supply paths.
Rule-maker words on rates after this data, as odds of a rate hike grew.
The link of pay data to price gains; pay rose 3.6% from a year ago while prices rose 3.8%.
Scope of gains in rent, food, and services outside energy, to see if the shock spreads.
