Jensen Huang did not accompany Trump on the China visit Analysis: NVIDIA chips struggle to secure major orders
Golden Finance reports that on May 13th, according to Lianhe Zaobao, Trump will make a state visit to China. The White House announced on the 11th a list of 17 business leaders accompanying him, covering fields such as technology, finance, aviation, and agriculture, including Tesla’s Musk, Apple’s Cook, Boeing’s Otterberg, and others. Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun was not invited, drawing public attention.
Huang Renxun previously stated that it would be an honor to be invited to China. Analysts point out that his absence is mainly due to the escalating competition between China and the U.S. in AI. Nvidia’s chips are caught in a dilemma of “the U.S. may not want to sell, and China may not want to buy,” making it difficult to secure large orders, which does not align with Trump’s goal of securing big deals during this visit.
Washington think tank researcher Fedasik said that the U.S. considers AI computing power a key factor in competing with China and is unwilling to make concessions on AI chip exports. Shen Meng from Xiang Song Capital stated that the U.S. uses AI technology as a bargaining chip to restrict China, while China has already launched domestically adapted chips for large models, significantly reducing Huang Renxun’s necessity to accompany him.
This visit by Trump mainly focuses on agriculture and commercial aviation, aiming to promote Boeing aircraft orders and advance the implementation of relevant details of the China-U.S. Trade Committee. The goal is to secure large orders to boost the U.S. midterm elections, but the likelihood of replicating the $253.5 billion order in 2017 is relatively low. (Dongxin News)
